ConstructionHow roof area is calculated
The calculation is based on the horizontal footprint area of the house (length × width, plus roof overhangs), divided by the cosine of the pitch angle. This accounts for the geometric fact that a sloped surface has a larger area than its horizontal projection.
Why roof area is always larger than the house footprint
Imagine the roof as an inclined plane stretched over the horizontal rectangle of the house. The steeper the pitch, the "longer" this sloped surface becomes relative to its horizontal projection. For example, at a 30° pitch the roof area exceeds the footprint by about 15%, and at 45° — already by 41%.
How to choose a roof pitch
- Low slope (5-20°): suitable for regions with little precipitation, requires more reliable waterproofing.
- Moderate pitch (20-35°): the most common range, suitable for most roofing materials, including metal tile.
- Steep roof (35-50°+): better for snowy regions (snow sheds faster), also traditional for certain architectural styles.
Why an overlap allowance is needed
Roofing materials (tiles, metal roofing, slate) are installed overlapping each other to ensure watertight joints. This means part of each sheet or element's area is "covered" by the adjacent one, so more material is actually needed than the calculated net roof area.
This calculation is a simplified model for a rectangular gable or hip roof of simple shape. For roofs with complex configurations (dormers, multiple levels, complex geometry), a detailed design from an architect or roofer is recommended.
FAQ
Why is roof area larger than the house's footprint?
Due to the slope, the actual roof surface area is always larger than the horizontal projection (the house footprint) — the steeper the pitch, the greater the difference.
What is the optimal roof pitch?
This depends on climate and roofing material type: in snowy regions, steeper pitches (35-45°) are preferred for better snow shedding, while metal roofing typically uses a 20-35° range.
How much extra material is needed for overlap?
Usually 10-15% extra beyond the calculated area — roofing materials are installed with overlap for waterproofing, and part of each sheet's area is covered by the adjacent one.
